What your first morning in the room is actually like
Chris — Founder of 5am Network
A lot of people who search for an online study room or study with me are not looking for a long essay on philosophy. They want something more concrete: tomorrow at half past five, I sit down at my computer — what actually happens in that morning?
This page is that walkthrough. One first morning, written so you can decide whether to come in.
What you came looking for
You may have tried waking early on your own. The alarm goes off. The room is quiet. The desk is clear. The plan is written down. Ten minutes later, your will starts negotiating with you. Nobody sees whether you showed up. Nobody is holding the same hour with you.
The morning room lives on this site. You sign in with Google, choose a nickname, and that name is what shows on your tile. It is not a three-hour video call. It is a structured coworking morning: one shared clock, brief check-ins, then everyone does their own work.
You do not have to perform. You do not have to overhaul your whole sleep schedule in one go. On the first morning, you only need to know you can get in, stay, and leave.
How the clock runs (Hong Kong time, HKT, UTC+8, every day)
- 05:00 / room opens. The screen is up. You can sit down, pour water, and put the one thing you will do today in front of you.
- 05:30 starts. The room enters its formal window: a short morning check-in, then focus.
- 05:45 is the first-entry cutoff. On your first join of the day, you need to be in before this. If you already joined today, you may reconnect after a drop.
- 08:15 ends. The room wraps up. Leave when you are ready — you do not have to stay until the last second.
For the fuller segment clock, read "What Actually Happens in a 5AM Network Morning?". The first time you come in, four times are enough: room opens, starts, first-entry cutoff, ends.
What you do — and what you do not have to do
Camera is encouraged. Not for a pretty check-in photo — so the room feels inhabited. Microphone stays off by default; leave it off unless you are sharing. Text chat is fine. Staying quiet the whole morning is also fine.
We do not force camera or microphone permission. That choice stays with you.
One thing is enough. On the first morning, you do not need three goals at once. Pick one priority: study, write, practice, rework a proposal — anything. The room gives you a clock and a sense of presence. It does not decide your work for you.
Attendance, in plain language
- 30 minutes of connected time counts as one qualifying day.
- Reconnects after a drop do not double-count overlapping time.
- Attendance credit stops at 08:00, even if you stay until 08:15.
- First entry closes at 05:45. After that, a first join for the day will not get in; if you already joined today, you may still reconnect after a drop.
We do not police whether you stepped away to pour tea. We also do not pretend a twenty-second visit is a morning. The rules are clear so "showing up" has a minimum bar — not to scare anyone.
If you cannot make 05:45 yet
Some people want to join, but their sleep rhythm is not there yet. Not waking before five is normal. You can start by adjusting sleep; there is a light programme on the site that helps you move wake time earlier without losing sleep: Move your wake-up earlier without losing sleep.. The FAQ will keep adding related notes too. You do not have to abandon the whole direction because tomorrow cannot be perfect.
Come when you are ready
Free for life. Joining is simple: Google sign-in → choose a nickname → join the morning room. Everything happens on the site. No separate app. No private message to anyone.
If you want the clock and the specs first, read "What Actually Happens in a 5AM Network Morning?". If you already have the idea, tomorrow's morning is one you can walk through yourself.
The details are here. Come when you are ready.
