After 20/20/20. Use the Rest of the Morning to Build.
Chris — Founder of 5am Network
The 20/20/20 formula, as popularised in The 5AM Club, is a way to spend the first hour of the day:
- Move — about twenty minutes of physical intensity.
- Reflect — about twenty minutes of stillness, journal, prayer, or breath.
- Grow — about twenty minutes of learning.
It is a clean shape. It is also not a law of physics, and it is not a claim we make for a brand we do not own.

What the original idea is for
The first hour is a buffer against a reactive day. Move so the body is not still in last night. Reflect so you do not outsource your mood to the inbox. Grow so you touch a book or a skill before other people start asking for things.
If that hour is all you can honestly protect, protect it. A smaller honest morning beats a theatrical one you abandon in nine days.
What we see after the first hour
The people who stay in our room past 06:00 are rarely still doing a formula. They are:
- writing the chapter
- shipping the feature
- studying for a credential
- building a small business in public silence
- training with a plan, not a story
- reading something thicker than a thread
The first hour is hygiene. The next two or three hours are where a serious goal either moves or gets postponed until “after work,” which means never.
That is our practical interpretation: keep a victory hour if it serves you, then protect a longer Building & Learning block while the city is still dark in Hong Kong.
Design a morning you can repeat
A useful morning is specific:
- Business: one customer conversation drafted, one page of numbers, not “work on the startup.”
- Skill: a lesson with a stopping point, then ten minutes of output.
- Writing: a word count or a finished ugly section.
- Software: a failing test, then a passing one.
- Study: active recall, not highlighting.
- Body: the session you already programmed, not a new identity.
- Reading: a chapter you can explain to the room at 06:30.
During our checkpoints (05:30, 06:30, 07:30) you may say that sentence out loud, type it, or keep your head down. The point is not performance. The point is that the work had a clock.
After the formula
If 20/20/20 is your on-ramp, use it. Then ask a ruder question: what would actually change my year if I gave it 05:35–08:00 of focus, three or four mornings a week, in a room that ends at 08:15?
We built the room for that question. Hong Kong time (HKT, UTC+8): room opens 5:00 am, starts 5:30, join by 5:45, ends 8:15. See how a morning is structured, then join if you want the extra hours to exist outside your notes app.
If you just finished the book, there is a first-week plan. If you want the room’s clock rather than the formula, read how the room works.
