You Woke Up at 5AM. Now What?

Chris — Founder of 5am Network

The most useful thing after a real 5AM wake-up is not deciding what to do—it is doing the one priority you already named last night. In Hong Kong’s early morning the world has not fully knocked yet; work first, then let messages and the commute in. If the task feels too big, shrink it until it can start.

5am Network runs on Hong Kong time (HKT, UTC+8). Room opens 5:00 am, starts 5:30, join by 5:45, ends 8:15. For many people who work here, that quiet shows up before the MTR crush and before WhatsApp or Slack light up—use it well and the week moves; spend it on scrolling and last-minute deciding, and by six you only have regret.

Choose one priority tonight

The most useful mornings start the night before, with one named priority.

Before you sleep, pick one thing. One. If tomorrow only moves that item, the day will feel honest. Write it where you will see it: a card, a note, the first line of a doc. Not twelve ambitions. One priority. Then go to sleep, and take “what should I do when I wake?” off the morning decision list.

When you wake, do only that

When the alarm goes, skip the theatre and open the thing you wrote down last night.

Sit down. Start. You do not need to look busy, or match anyone else’s project. Put the best short stretch of attention on the work that can actually change your week. If you join a free morning session on this site, you name today’s priority in a few minutes and then get a long stretch of quiet—that quiet is the point. If it feels too big, shrink it

When you freeze, do not force the whole goal—shrink it to the smallest step that can start.

Not “write the chapter.” Open the file and write the next ugly paragraph. Not “rebuild the business.” Send the email you have been carrying. 5AM is not for proving you are impressive. It is for beginning while the world is still quiet.

Quick answers

1. Tonight name one priority → 2. In the morning do only that → 3. If you freeze, shrink it until it can start.

What should you do after waking at 5AM? Do the one priority you already chose last night—not another round of deciding.

When should you choose the priority? The night before you sleep; not in the first minutes after the alarm.

What if the task feels too big? Shrink it to the smallest step that can start, then begin.
